Bear Fact Friday


Panda bears have an extra “thumb” (which is actually an extra-large wrist bone) just for holding onto bamboo stalks. A panda bear can eat over 45 lbs. of bamboo per day.

Bears have never lived in Australia or Antarctica. Although bears do not currently live in Africa, bear fossils have been found there. Scientists are unsure why bears do not live in Africa today.

Sloth bears are the only bears that are more active at night.

People in Asian cultures have traditionally used bear organs and secretions for medicinal purposes. One author notes that there “are fewer than one million bears on Earth and more than one billion potential consumers of bear parts as medicine.

When U.S. President Theodore (Teddy) Roosevelt refused to shoot a black bear cub on a hunting trip, a cartoon featured the event, and soon stuffed toy manufacturers popularized “Teddy’s bear.”

Brown bears are the largest of all the bear species and are considered to be the largest living land carnivore. Brown bears can weigh as much as 2200 pounds. The size of brown bears varies between the sexes and among the subspecies. Males are significantly heavier than females and the Kodiak bear is considered to be the largest of all the subspecies of brown bears. Brown bears are widely distributed, inhabiting a range that includes the northern parts of North America, Europe and Asia. There are numerous subspecies of brown bears including the Carpathian bear, European brown bear, Gobi bear, grizzly bear, Kodiak bear and several others.

Last fact of the day: I have been having nightmares of bears mauling people.  Perhaps I might need to stop thinking about bears!!!

    I had the most gnarly dream about big, brown Grizzly bears attacking towns! There were also buffalo and ostrich attacks but it was mainly the bears that freaked my shit out!! Crazy. Something’s in the water I guess.
