In which Andie is a god

Andie has traveled to a fair number of places around the world at this point.  In high school, she went to Chile and Argentina with her Spanish class.  She also spent a summer abroad in Barcelona, Spain so you would think she’d be fluent in Spanish by now but that’s actually not the case at all.

She also spent a month in Tanzania working in a village and climbing Mt. Kilimanjaro.  After graduation from high school she went on some adrenaline junkie trip to New Zealand and this year she’s already been to Amsterdam with her Club Field Hockey team from Duke and is presently taking a summer study abroad in Greece so needless to say, Andie is a VERY WELL TRAVELED GIRL.

One thing Andie has always told me is that she is “incredibly funny abroad” so we think it’s possible that she’s just a much funnier person when she’s not on US soil.  This trip, after she finishes her program, she will be traveling to Spain and Italy before returning home to work in a lab for the remainder of the summer.

When she was younger, she had a phone so that we could talk to her but this is a super-cheap trip thus we don’t hear from her very often and when we do?  Well, you can see the type of information she’s relating.  VERY IMPORTANT STUFF.  I didn’t even know she had arrived safely until I saw her Facebook status had been updated to Greece.

So people, as your children get older this is the type of important information you can expect to receive about your kids lives:

HIIII just wanted to email and say the trip is fun we are in San Torini and it’s super pretty. I am pretty much fluent in ancient Greek and Zeus appeared to me and told me I was a god (similar to Percy Jackson the best movie ever haha). Additionally I am pretty funny in Europe. Why are you never on Facebook chat it’s annoying.

One week later I received the following from her:

Eeeek hi. Just thought I would update you that I am alive. We are going to Athens tomorrow yay. Trip = fun fun fun fun. We had a midterm two days ago…it was pretty easy except I didn’t know 2 of the dates blaaaa so annoying because half the stuff I studied wasn’t on there. Still no religion grade. What. Ummm very funny stories involving stray dogs and free alcohol. Climbed a mountain that was 1000 feet the other day, and climbed 989 steps to an awesome castle today. Greece = kewl. I have a friend from Hawaii = awesome = vacation trip next year. How is Greensboro? I used my southern voice today. Big hit. Very popular. Funny in Greece.

Finally, I saw that she was managing to talk to her friends so I left the following on her Facebook page:

Dear Andie: whatever you do, please acknowledge all your friends but don’t let your parents know how you’re doing. No matter…we are fine without you. hahahahaha

Andie responded with this:

Hiiiiiiiii

sooo you wrote on fb that i need to update you more, and this is the only hotel we’ve been in that has decently fast internet without paying. anyways.

I last emailed you from Tolo, which was on Peloponesse, so we went to Athens which was cool. We went and saw a protest and met a greek guy to help us translate what they were saying…fortunately for dr ramasunder, i did not get killed in the uprising. (See this post) the acropolis was way cool but super hot and very crowded so it was slightly anti climactic. umm from athens we went to delphi which was one of the prettiest places we’ve been and we only stayed there for one night before continuing to thessalaniki, which is the second largest city and home of Alexander the Great, and that’s where we are now. last night we went on a pirate bar i.e. a boat that has a bar and you get to sail around and dance which was fun… we are leaving here in about an hour and we are going to the name of a town i cant remember, but tomorrow we are climbing mt olympus (yaaaay) and i am expecting for zeus to appear to me and tell me I am actually a god. on a scale of 1 to Very Likely, I give that a 10 (which is pretty likely). anyways, after that we are on the boat (which is a yacht) and I believe we sail around the cycladic islands and dock every night. I got a 100 on the midterm yaaay so I am not yet failing school. my taoism grade came up and I got an A- so i was annoyed. oh well. I still have a 3.77 which is decent. i also have only 100 pages left in game of thrones but I dont have a ton of time to read it. hokay. i am going to go because I need to pack my stuff. adios.

I completely cracked up at the line that said on a scale of 1 to Very Likely, I give that a 10 (which is pretty likely).  Yeah, she’s definitely my kid.  And last, just the other day I received another missive from her.

hiii just wanted to say we are leaving to get on the boat today (yay fun)  although I am nervous because he JUST gave us an assignment for a 10-12 page paper due in three days wtf and there’s no internet sooo that sucks. we climbed Mt Olympus 2 days ago it was tall but really fun and sunrise was quite pretty. umm anyways yeah i am in a random cafe and my battery is dying so i gotta go … bye

As you can see, facts are few and far between but for some reason I’m not even worried about it.  Kevin wants to know what her itinerary is after the program and where she’ll be and where she’s staying but I’m just sitting here thinking “at least I’ve done something right!”  I’ve got this 20 year old, independent world traveler who’s confident enough to go away without any strings holding her back.

What were the chances of that?  On a scale of 1 to very likely, I’d give it a 10.

I’m just saying …

I hope Andie realizes what a lucky girl she is!!! I was fortunate enough to travel to some exotic places myself. Sometimes I felt sad for the begging children and especially about the fact that I could not help them all … Overall, however, my travel experiences have been mostly positive – besides being robbed in an upscale hotel in Cairo, Egypt. Anyways, traveling opens new perspectives. Once you have the travel bug it never lets you go!

robbed? bummer… Andie does realize how lucky she is and indeed, this is the present for her 21st bday which isn’t actually until January.

She loves to travel and has been a LOT of places…

WOW! What an awesome trip. Greece is on my top 10 to visit. So far my son (who just graduated and is leaving for the Army on the 27th) only wants to go to Germany! Who’s kid is HE? But, hey, whatever…it’s HIS life and I’ve raised my boys to LIVE and follow their dreams and that’s why he signed with the Army Nat’l Guard last July. So, yes, Lynn, on a scale of 1 to very likely, I give you an AWESOME for being a great Mom!

My 22 year old son is traveling Europe this summer, staying with friends and in hostels overseas, and most stressful for me, without an itinerary (other than plane tickets on scheduled dates: Malega, Dublin, Sligo, Paris, Edinburg. I am spending WAY too much time on the computer waiting to hear if he is alive; but thankfully I ran across this blog. It made me laugh and brought me much comfort! Anyway, thanks for the humor!

OMG your daughter is hilarious. She should start a blog. I am going to spend a lot of time today imagining future texts from my now 9yo and 3yo. Hopefully I’ll get the chance to compare them to real ones in about 11 years. 11 years! That doesn’t seem very long….
