In which AT&T freezes me out

I didn’t actually set out to become best friends with ALL the AT&T repairmen in Greensboro but apparently, that’s what’s happening.  Let me enlighten you about my last few weeks.

Once upon a time, really for about the last 15 years, I have been a Time Warner Cable customer but alas, I really haven’t been too fond of TWC.  I had their RoadRunner Internet service, their cable TV and their phone line in a “bundle.”  Now, I had the fastest Internet available aka “Turbo” but in my humble opinion, Turbo isn’t how I’d describe my internet speed.

I also had 2 digital boxes and the rest of my TV’s were just regular cable.  There was also a HUGE hesitation when you tried to change the channels for the TV.  However, due to the fact that I didn’t want a dish and that I’d had my email address forever, I wasn’t really looking to change.

One day, a man came to my house and told me that AT&T had NOW COME TO MY NEIGHBORHOOD!  Not only that, but I could get MORE BANG FOR MY BUCK.  The downside? Basically only that I would have to change my email address.  For less money, I could now get more stations, better Internet, and hopefully no delays when changing channels.  Finally, Kevin and I decided what the hell and we switched.

That was two weeks ago.  We did love the fact that now ALL of our televisions were digital.  We liked how when you changed channels there was NO DELAY.  We liked how the In Demand aspect worked.  We loved how we now had HBO, Showtime, Starz, Cinemax and many other premium channels.  In short, we were thrilled with the new TV situation UNTIL … the TV started freezing.  Not that it was cold but the screen would just freeze.

After a day or so we started noticed that it was random times, random channels and random TV’s.  There was literally no pattern at all.  SO I called AT&T and of course they told me to reboot my modem.  “Already done,” I told them.  “Do it again!” they said to which I replied “I’ve done it a ton of times.”

To be fair, they came right out and switched out my main modem.  “This should do the trick,” they said.  It didn’t.  Fortunately, AT&T leaves a support card so I called the installer directly.  He (Derek) came back and tinkered with stuff and told me “done.”

It wasn’t.  Done that is.  Or it was done, but it didn’t work so I called again.

Next time, Brian showed up.  He spent a LOT of time dealing with the wiring, informed me that he had FOUND the problem and that all would be well with the world.

It wasn’t.  Within a day I was having random freeze-ups, usually at the crucial moment of whatever game or movie or show we were watching.

So, a few days ago I called Brian back and he said, “no problem, someone will be out tomorrow” (which was yesterday).

So yesterday Mark showed up.  Of course, the slot was 12-4 and he showed up at 5:45 but at least AT&T had called to warn me of his tardiness.  I ONCE AGAIN explain the entire thing and he tells me that I was right; it was PROBABLY not IN my house but something with the “AT&T Portal.”

The game plan was that AT&T would come the next day (today…Saturday) and change out the main portal in my neighborhood.

Now first of all, I am the FIRST person in this neighborhood to try AT&T and about 20 people have called to see how I like it.  I told this to AT&T so they could see how important it is that they please me.  Second, I have until January 14th to cancel my Time Warner Cable because I’m already paid through then so time is of the essence.

So, this morning at 9 they call me and tell me EXCELLENT NEWS, they’ve switched out the portal and please check out the TV situation.

Now the TV situation is a feast or famine thing.  Sometimes it doesn’t freeze for hours and other times it can freeze once a minute so this would take some TV viewing.  I tell the guy I’ll let him know and hang up.

Then I go to call Kevin and guess what?  NO PHONE!  I have no phone service AT ALL.  I reboot the modem and still … no phone.  I call Mark and leave a message that I have no phone and go to the gym.

I come home and I have NO PHONE.  I reboot the modem AGAIN and I call Brian this time because I still have NO PHONE.  Seriously guys?  If I wanted more members of this household I would have had more kids.  Apparently I’m adopted Brian and Mark!

So, I spoke to Brian and they are putting in ANOTHER ticket.  He said, “you sure have had a LOT of problems” to which I replied, “I certainly had.”

To be honest, I’m starting to lose my sense of humor over the entire situation but I’m trying to look at it as just a friendly way to pal around with the AT&T boys.  Hope all is well.  Today I have Internet.  I’m not sure about the TV.  I have no phone so don’t call.

If you don’t read this blog EVER AGAIN it means I have no Internet.

I’m just saying …

ADDENDUM:  It’s now Sunday.  I got my phone back on Saturday afternoon so the good news is that NOW I can call AT&T and tell them that THIS MORNING (Sunday) my TV was FREEZING up again.  Holy shit!!!!!!

I can’t EVEN believe this.  I’ll let you know what the next step is.  Before long, I’ll probably know the CEO of AT&T!

Sorry to hear about the freezing. We’ve had AT&T for over a year and the random freezing continues. Doesn’t sound like it happens as often as yours does but I think ATT has some issues. Just saying.
Hope it all gets worked out SOON.

Really? You’re the first person who has told me that…that isn’t good. I thought it was just us. What have they done about it???

I grew up in MD with whatever “Bell” company was dominant until they eventually all grouped back together as Verizon. This was before they offered TV. We had cable, which sucked so we dropped it. we got DirecTV, which was awesome, BUT the price kept rising and rising. So when we moved to IL in 2006, we decided no more paying for TV, since digital was arriving.

We have AT&T for phone and internet out here, and they keep begging me to buy tv and save on a bundle…which would add $100 to my bill so how am I saving? I can say AT&T will keep working at it until they get it, but sometimes you have to wonder if they couldn’t be a titch more selective in their hiring processes. Maybe then they would get it figured out faster. AND sometimes right hand and left hand don’t talk which leaved the feet in limbo… You almost have to wonder if they are really run by the government! ;-)

    GOOD LUCK!

I’ve had Comcast for over 20 years and while their prices have escalated and I’m sure I could get it cheaper with someone else, Comcast’s service is awesome so I’m quite hesitant to switch as I’ve heard horror stories about other companies, therefore I stay put.

Sure hope your new adopted sons fix the problem soon!

We too, just switched over to AT &T. We had some instalation issues as well (day off work plus many other problems that I won’t go into) so I called and politely complained. Two of our TV’s require the cable box at a charge of $7 per box, per month. They credited my account by giving me those for no charge for 12 months. I’ve been happy so far …

I don’t have Uverse available in my neighborhood but I heard the internet speed isn’t fast enough to support my streaming Netflix anyways. I have Comcast, who everyone seems to hate. But every time my bill goes up or something weird happens, I just call and threaten to cancel if it isn’t remedied immediately. Strangely enough, it gets remedied immediately. Sorry your having so many issues. If my tv froze up in the middle of Shameless, I would break something.

Lynn – I think you should send your story to their CEO! I’ve been having similar issues w/AT&T for years. Never fails….usually 3-4 times a year and it’s drives me INSANE!!! Hesitant to switch to TW…fearful I’ll jump out of one fire into another!

AT&T drives me crazy too! Simply trying to find their phone number on the website makes me want to slit my wrists! And then to go through their voice prompts…..ugh! We’ve thought about switching but better the devil you know than the devil you don’t??

I had ATT for over a year with random freezes and service outages. I finally got sick of talking to the repair department with no results and the last time was over a weekend. At the time, they told me that they were doing some work on the portal in my area. Then my internet went out while I was online with the service department. When I called they told me that my account did not include internet (I had been paying for internet and TV for over a year) and I would have to call on Monday during regular business hours to talk to a sales person. I waited until Monday, called the sales department to explain my issues and they said I would have to send my modem back and they would send me a new modem. It was at this point that I called Time Warner. It’s not perfect, but my cable has not frozen and there are service people available 24/7.

3 Years of UVerse here – switched from Directv because of poor reception in the rain… The freezing and splotchy screens, no signal messages, untold restarts, 2 modems and temperamental wi-fi, were getting more frequent for us up until last weekend. Did some online research and found on many forums that every company has it’s individual issues – technology is simply out pacing mass broadband service carriers. So – switching to Comcast in anger didn’t seem like it would help after all.
Walking back to my frozen playoff game from the computer, I thought I’d just check out one of the connections in another room I’d unplugged a month ago. Unplugged AND disconnected the cable from the receiver box. The cable connector was resting on the threads of the ‘Cable In’ receptacle thing from which I’d unscrewed it last month. For whatever reason, I pulled it away and bent the cable so it wouldn’t be touching anything. (Remember that this receiver was also unplugged from the power cord). The game came back on and everything has been fine since. (knock wood). Go figure.
So I got to see my Steelers get Tebow’d – great. Maybe you can get him to come fix your cable…
It’s frustrating as hell, I feel for you and I wish you the crazy luck I had.

Well, hopefully the Patriots won’t get Tebowed next week.

That was a great comment. I’ve had so many responses like this. It was good to know I wasn’t alone.

      Thanks
