In which David Spade surprised me

I’m not normally a big fan of David Spade.  In fact, I’m not sure that I’ve ever really watched much that he did BUT I just heard a snippet of an interview that he did and I absolutely loved his response.

It was just a quickie but the reporter was asking him about the “Reese Witherspoon” situation (see here if you’re oblivious.)  As you know, when her husband was being pulled over for Driving under the Influence she got out of the car TWICE and harassed the police officers by saying “Do you know who I am?”

David was asked “when is it okay to use the do you know who I am card?” and his reply was “never.”

He said that “clearly if you have to explain how famous you are and they have no idea who you are then you’re not as famous as you think you are” which I think is both hilarious and spot on.

He went on to say that when he’s “turned away” from an event because they “don’t know whom he is” then he just leaves.

I really applaud the guy for being so normal in that respect.  I hear all the time about celebrities and quasi celebrities demanding things because they think they’re somebody important.

You know who was important in the Reese Witherspoon situation; the policemen and the general public that they protect, that’s who is important.  For her to have a little tantrum just because she is who she is completely annoys me.

So kudos for David Spade for at least being human enough to get that sometimes who you are simply doesn’t matter because what you’re doing does.

This was a short post but I’m a bit busy and that’s all I’m gonna say on the matter.

One must wonder about Ms. Witherspoon’s sobriety as well. She seems to be absolutely mortified after the fact.

I had a “do you know who I am” pulled on me once by the wife of a wealthy community leader in another town in another lifetime over something so absurd I can’t even recall what it was about.

I do recall my response, “I don’t care who you are”.

Happened all of the time in the airline biz, when I was in that business 25 years ago… Usually California state congress people, wanting us to hold planes for them… “Do you have any idea, WHO I AM?” nope.. and one time Linda Blair of Exorcist fame…super wasted on the phone…gave her VIP treatment, and she still complained…washed up at that point.. So David Spade is spot on! Do you know his sister-in-law is Kate Spade of Kate Spade designer fame?

    But I digress…

Lynn! Do you have any idea who I AM????

How about next week…I give you a ride in my swanky mini van??? LOL!
