In which i dawdle and delay

3d human with empty chat bubble

Are you guys like me on this? I harp at everybody in this family to get to the dentist, to get their eyes checked, to go to all these appointments but I’m actually years behind on my own personal checkups?

I guess I’m like that because my kids will call me from college (or wherever) and say that they need a refill on their contacts or some other prescription (like a skin one or something) and then they’ll call it in (or more likely I will) and it will be expired.

As a result, each summer I harp on Andie and Daniel to get their eyes checked and go to the dermatologist (if they need to) so that when you call for a refill you aren’t told “I’m sorry but their prescription is over and year and therefore we can’t fill it.”

It’s ironic because I just got a reminder from the OB/GYN that I haven’t had an appointment in 2 years.  I didn’t go to a family practice for so long that I was dropped.  I have never had a dermatologist and I really, really need to get my eyes checked.

And yet I dawdle and delay and I have yet to make a single appointment.  It’s interesting that we moms are so on top of our family’s health and yet we totally neglect ours.

The only doctor I see regularly is the dentist and that’s because they make the next appointment while I’m sitting stuck in the chair so it’s already set up.

I need to see the eye doctor because my right eye has gotten so bad that everything is blurry and yet here I sit, typing on my computer, when a two-minute call would take care of the whole thing.

It’s not like I don’t have time.  I told Andie yesterday that I needed to just bite the bullet and schedule a bunch of appointments.  After all, I’ve never even had my skin screened for moles or cancer or anything and I’m almost 54 and have spent my life baking in the sun.

I know, I know.  I’m an idiot but for some reason, I can never bring myself to do it.  Instead I thought, hmmm this is probably a very common thing and would therefore be a good blog post.

Nonetheless, my goal this week (along with all the crap paperwork I have) is to make the calls and get this crap scheduled.  Do you guys procrastinate on your own personal health too? I am curious if it’s just me or really, really common.

Let me know.

Lynn

Dentist and Oby-gyn. Those I make. The others get delayed and delayed and delayed. And I make those because my dentist does what yours does, and the OB makes the appointment a year in advance for me, without consulting my schedule, and tells me to just change the actual time and date when I get the reminder e-mail. I do not have a doctor and rely on urgent care centers. I just had to go to Lenscrafters because my eye doctor had a five month delay, my glasses couldn’t be fixed, and I needed a new prescription. (And at that, Lenscrafters did not take “about an hour”; it was ten days because I’m so freaking myopic). So, no. Not just you.

Ugh! Totally not just you – I am a Healthcare Loser! Behind on yearly checkup, mammogram, etc. it’s just so much hassle!

I work in health care and STILL don’t keep up. The Mister and The Child are up to date, but me? Nope.
