In which i receive solicitations

Dear ...

I don’t have a very big blog and I certainly don’t have a very large following.  The reasons for this are many and varied but the point is, I do tend to get certain solicitations from other people and it really makes me wonder how closely people are paying attention.

For example, a few weeks ago I got a solicitation for a product.  They said that I could use this product and then have a giveaway on my blog.  Now I’m sure that many of you get these all the time but honestly, I rarely get solicitations.

Perhaps the name ALL FOOKED UP has something to do with it but still, it’s unusual. Nonetheless this person asked if I host a giveaway.  I had to write her a nice letter back and tell her that first; I’m awful at giving stuff away.  Why I’ve been trying to give my kids away since infancy and I’m still stuck with them and that’s been 22 years.  Second, I simply don’t do stuff like that or reviews or anything on my blog.

My blog is for fun.  When it stops being fun I’ll stop blogging.  Simple as that.

Today, however, I received TWO letters asking if I would do some link exchanges for guest posts.  I actually do have a guest post EVERY THURSDAY but I’m pretty sure I made it clear that they need to be amusing.

And yet, this person asked that I put up a guest post and he even provided me with a sample of his writing.  It was a critique of kids shows.  Yeah, you heard me right. Kids shows.  Shows like:

The Backyardigans

Yo Gabba Gabba

The Wonder Pets

Go Diego, Go

Dora The Explorer

Jack’s Big Music Show

Ni Hau Kai Lan

Now, I’ve heard of some of these shows but seriously? Has this guy even read my blog?  Other than the fact that my kids are 18, 21 and 22 I almost NEVER discuss little kids.  I also state that the post must be amusing so WHY would anyone think that I would want this crap on my blog?

Now I’m not The Bloggess or 27bslash6 so I’m not going to ridicule these people either by email or on my blog but seriously people out there, do your fucking homework.

Don’t send shit that flat out doesn’t fit the tone of the blog.  Someone once told me that I was doing Go Ahead, Amuse me for selfish reasons and that I used it to get new readers.

Honestly?  I mostly feature smaller bloggers and if that was my intention than I’m flat out failing.  It’s true that it did relieve me from writing 5 posts/week and now I only have to write 4 but writing 5 posts is actually quicker than tracking down the posts each week and putting them up.  I did it because I was curious what people thought was “funny” and how in line with them my sense of humor was.

The second email I received asked if I had guest posting opportunity’s available.  Why yes, can’t you read? I’ll just tell them they can submit a funny post for Go ahead, amuse me if they’re interested.

It astonishes me the things people do for Google rankings.

So people out there if you’re reading this?  Please don’t send me crap.  If I wanted crap I could just deal with my paperwork.  People keep sending that shit to me also.

I’m just saying …

Oh the selfishness of guest posts. If it nets you new readers, so what? The POINT is that both you AND your guest get traffic from each other. I found you when The Literal Mom guested here. (And seriously, I subscribed that day. You got an F bomb into your title. How could I NOT love your blog!!?!)

    Anyway, you didn’t lose out when your kids grew out of hideous kids shows. {shudder}

How the hell are guest posts selfish? Guest posts introduce your readers to other bloggers and is actually you helping them out. Then when they link to yours you might get a teeny bit of new traffic. You can tell you do it because you think what has been written is amusing.

People are always going to need something to bitch about I guess. As for the kid show reviews, that’s just amusing in itself. Maybe you should make it a “go ahead amuse me” with a “The fact that this guy thought this made sense, is amusing.” :)

I dunno how all this guest posting and cross linking brew-ha-ha works, but if I can somehow trade some teenagers out of my house and into yours, or perhaps swap out my 12 year old for your 22 yr old, that’d work for me. Cuz I know it gets worse before it gets better, and w a 12, 15, 17 and 19 yo … i’ve still got a long road ahead of me.

Still, wouldn’t trade it for the even one Dora show. Not ever. Never go back!

I’ve gotten offers to do a couple of book reviews and that was kind of interesting in that I really liked the books a lot, and I’m a ho for free stuff. But solicitations for guest posting? It’s tempting sometimes when I can’t think of a thing to write about, but I’d rather pull something out of my own ass than someone else’s. Once I gave away a $25 Amazon gift card because it was my one-year blogoversary though. I don’t get many solicitations anymore and that’s fine with me. I agree with you completely. Read the damn blog before sending requests. Alas, they walk among us… and they vote. ;)

I can only think of those kids shows – and believe me at one stage of my life I knew all the words to The Wiggles – after a bottle of wine when the glow of the grapes can take the pain away…(BTW, I was totally chuffed to be on your blog, think its really generous of you)

I like to read your posts because you almost always say fuck. I don’t get to use that word nearly as much as I once did. If I saw a review for Yo Gabba Gabba on your page, I might just say fuck it and never come back. And hey- if you ever need a guest poster…well…pick me :)

I found you through thegirlfriendmom who guests posts on your site, and I am all signed up. The Backyardigans is currently blaring while I write this comment. This show does not need reviewing, it just needs to keep my kids quiet so I can find blogs with variations of “fuck” in the title. It’s nice as all hell to meet you…

    It’s frustrating, isn’t it?

Unfortunately, as you get bigger, it’s only going to get worse. Hopefully you don’t waste too much time because of it, but it’s kind of hard to avoid when most people simply -don’t- read requirements.

It’s amazing how many times I would tell potential guest bloggers that my site was strictly PG or PG-13, kid-friendly, etc….and they’d turn right around and pitch alcohol posts or send me articles that had s*xual references in it. I mean, really?? Just no… :S

    • Lynn
      April 15, 2012

yeah, it’s crazy. I really don’t get that many pitches but I’d be fine with none
