In which I say Happy Birthday Kevin

Last Christmas, my kids gave Kevin and I the best presents ever. They made a list for each one of us of “100 reasons” why they loved us. My birthday was June 20th and I republished the list for all to see. Today, August 17th, is Kevin’s 53rd birthday and I’m printing this list again because I love him, he’s a great day, and very frankly I can always do whatever the hell I want on this blog. I realize that many of these are inside jokes but you can see that my kids adore their dad. So do I but don’t tell anyone. Enjoy!

100 reasons why we love dad:

…because you waited too long, you blew it…
…because he gets zosted…
…because he sounds like a wookie in the morning…
…because he’s scared of the hiccups
…because we’re sad he didn’t pass on his tall genes
…because we’re happy he didn’t pass on his pale genes
…because it’s just a visual representation…
…because he makes the best steak
…because he makes the best pancakes
…because of his forced proposal…
…because he taught us to play pool
…because he played the ladder games and the ball game at the pool
…because he bit the ear off of Andie’s Micky Mouse (don’t worry: Andie is working through it)
…because he’s a good workout buddy…
…because you can never have too many operations
…because you’re only tough if you get both shoulders done at the same time
…because he’s an overexplainer
…because when you ask him a physics question, you get the answer along with a long explanation about an hour and a half later
…because he’s intense about Risk…
…because he cheated in Candyland against Cammy
…because he made Grandma cry in Monopoly…
…because he THINKS he has mad skills at Ms. Pac Man
…because he used to be Baby Bozo
…because he used to play Bumpy Night with us…
.…and he came and slept in our room when Keely had nightmares…
…because he could throw us higher than anybody else in the pool
…because he gave Keely a complex about grades and now we’re all doing exceptional…
…because he’s good at parking (questionable)
…because he bought Keely a really nice new mountain bike for Christmas
…because he told her what was the point of having a mountain bike if you won’t go down this path?..
…because that was not a path
…because not only did Keely’s arm break, but so did the bike
…because after all that he said, “Keely, do me a favor and get back on the bike”
…because he’s the hardest worker we know…
…because he inspires all of us to work harder
…(because we got his work ethic rather than mom’s)
…because he’s the golden boy…

…because the first ten minutes of Up make him cry…
…because Charlie St. Cloud is “his kind of movie”
…because What a Girl Wants is the best movie ever
…because Love Actually is the best movie ever…
…because Pride and Prejudice is the best movie ever…
…because we’re not sure what the best movie ever actually is, but it’s probably a chick flick
…because he loves all Boston sports
…because he’s so optimistic when watching sports
…because that one time he almost caught the fly ball but he went to the bathroom instead..
…because he loves Duke basketball
…because he won a signed ball at the Globetrotters halftime show…
…because Bambi is the saddest movie ever
…because he is good at pool basketball and gives Tyler so much shit
…because he almost won with Will Pugh…
…because POLAR POST UP…
…because he used to let Midnight crush his chest…

…because he slides his fist under your back when you’re laying down
…because when he laughs really hard he punches you really hard
…because he behaves so well at Passover…
…because his face turns so red after he tries to eat more horseradish than Keely (which is impossible)…
.…because he’s the best Jew in the family because he’s the only one who’s ever fasted
…because he asked mom what bra size she wore the first time he met her…
…because his elvish name means Little Father
…because he explains movies while you watch them even when you get it
…because of lunch at Zoe’s when he brings his big cup and still gets 5 refills…
…because he always lets you have the bigger half when you’re splitting something…
…because he tries to pull the invisible string out of the palm of your hand even though it NEVER WORKS…
…because when he finally got a mattress that he liked he let mom trade it in
…because his basketball jersey for the March Madness pool says Candyass…
…because he threw water on mom in the airport for writing that…
…because he refused to apologize for throwing water on her
. …because when he texts he types “u” instead of “you”…

…because he ran against a step ladder for the position of “dad”
…because we pretended he almost lost…

…because mom never follows the lists he leaves
…because he spelled shutters wrong on a list for mom…
…because he was born in August (like Daniel) and on the 17^th (like Keely)…
…because he let us watch Terminator when we were two…
…because we just realized that The Last of the Mohicans might ACTUALLY be his favorite movie!…
…because “Stay alive! I will find you!”
…because he loves the butterflies in Andie’s room…
…because he always tries to hide the clay thing Andie made for him…
.…because he left all of Andie’s Styrofoam-ball-dog ornaments at the top of the Christmas tree
…because he’s so meticulous about his car
…because he gets haircuts more often than everyone else in the family combined
…because he has a strong sense of family…
…because no matter how stressed or tired he gets, he’s still the best dad we could ever have.
