In which i took a pill

I’ve never had insomnia before.  I mean, I’ve had periods where I didn’t sleep well but I’ve never had those nights where you were literally up all night or at least felt like you only slept a few minutes at a time.

Until recently at least.  For some reason, out of the blue, a few weeks ago I stopped sleeping.  Just like that.  I could neither fall asleep, stay asleep or sleep in.  I would wake up delirious but then I’d be ok and I wouldn’t be able to fall asleep again that night no matter how tired I felt.

It wasn’t a manic thing either.   I know what those are like with the mind racing and all that jazz; no I just simply couldn’t sleep.  So my shrink prescribed a sleeping pill for me.  I didn’t take it the first week because I felt like I had enough issues without being addicted to something else but yesterday I finally filled the prescription.

Last night at bedtime (11:00) I took the pill.

I couldn’t fall asleep still.

I GUESS  I finally did.

I had bizarre dreams.

I woke up at 1:30 and fell back asleep.

I had more bizarre dreams.

The alarm went off at 6:40 am

I couldn’t get up

I told Kevin I wasn’t getting up

I didn’t get up with Kevin

I didn’t get up when Daniel left for school at 8:00

I told my brother when he called at 8:30 I couldn’t get up

I fell asleep and had weird dreams

I told my brother when he called at 10:00 ok I’ll get up

I got up

I couldn’t have told you what my name was

I felt like I was in a fog

I had my chocolate protein shake

Still hazy

I had coffee

Still hazy

I had more coffee

Still hazy

I went to the gym and worked out

Woah … still hazy

I took a shower

STILL HAZY

The doctor MIGHT have said try a half a pill

Perhaps that would have been a good idea

Why don’t I write this shit down?

That was rhetorical?

It’s 1:30 and I’m better, but still tired

I don’t think those sleeping pills are for me

Now I’m even afraid to try a half of a pill

I think I’d rather be exhausted from not sleeping

Fucking sleeping pills

Fucking insomnia

Yeah! That …

IT TOOK 3 DAYS FOR THIS SHIT TO CLEAR OUT MY SYSTEM!!!  NEVER AGAIN!!

You say that now! Just wait until you’ve gone a week without sleep. Just be sure to try that half a pill around 9:00 or 10:00. Any later and yeah…you’re totally screwed. Good luck and welcome to the club. FYI…this club sucks.

Did you ever try any OTC meds, like Tylenol PM? Fortunately, I’ve never had trouble sleeping but my sister and a friend of mine swear by it.

Not being able to sleep really majorly sucks. I’ve had sleep issues for almost 20 years. Nothing works for me. I’ve tried 3 different sleeping pills…don’t work. Tried Melatonin…doesn’t work. OTC shit…doesn’t work. If this is a club, like Vapid Vixen said, I want to quit.

Try Gravol. It’s much milder and doesn’t make you all hazy for three days (and it’s not addictive)

Do you mind if I ask what kind of sleeping pill you took? My doctor prescribed ambien for me and I had the exact same experience you tried and then I tried Lunesta and it was so much better. I fell asleep within 30 mins of taking it and woke up 8 hours later feeling great. Of course everyone reacts differently…….

I take Melatonin for my sleep problems, fixes them right up. It’s non-addictive and there is no haziness. (Over the counter).

I also take Melatonin. My company has random drug tests that a sleeping pill could pull a positive on and put me on administrative leave until I provided proof of the prescription. So to be pro-active and not have forced time off, and still get a decent night’s sleep, I take Melatonin.

Safe and all natural. No side effects except a decent night’s sleep. And since it’s OTC for less than $10 for upwards of 100 pills, and at different doses, (I usually take 1 3 mg at night) I can get a 3 month supply for less than my co-pay for a prescription.

I’m a brand new reader and I love your blog. I have had insomnia issues for years. I tried melatonin (3 mg at a time) and it worked for about a month then stopped working for me. I learned that meditation and relaxation exercises help me a little, but mostly I just learned I wasn’t meant to sleep. :)

Hope you find something that works for you. Getting great sleep then all of a sudden not being able to is something that I can only imagine would be horrific. I hate to say I’m used to it, but I kind of am.

I’ve always been very anxious about prescription sleeping pills, so I suffered through some horrible sleepless nights. Finally, after missing work too many time because I couldn’t function, my sister recommended Tylenol PM. I only took one pill (not the recommended 2) because I didn’t want side affects the next day – HALLELUJAH! It helped just enough and I wasn’t “hung-over” the next day. When my mind is spinning or when I’ve been in bed for an hour without sleep coming, I take one pill and all is right with the world again. Good luck!

I can get to sleep ok but always wake up about 4.30am when my mind starts churning and repeats itself. Often coincides with the cat wanting to go out which means I have to get up TOO! I can then fall back to sleep round about 7.15 just as the alarm goes…

I take a generic for Ambien, 10 mg and it has been a lifesaver! I haven’t had any side effects at all and I was on the verge of a breakdown after years of sleep . Maybe the dosage was just too high? I wouldn’t rule out completely if you are still having trouble, sleep deprivation is a horrible thing long term. It can cause heart problems, high blood pressure and many other health issues.

Sleep, ahhh, I have missed you. Melatonin generally works for me, but I have issues staying asleep. I have tried a variety of sleeping pills, medication, antidepressents, which make you welll, depressed and hung over. If you need to be clear headed in the morning ( amust for a working mother), 2 melatonin 1/2hour before bed. A 4 hr Benedryl at 1 or 2am, if your awake. If you wake up later than that don’t bother because it will still be in your system in the morning. The last deep sleep I have had is when I had my latest endoscopy done.
