In which i wish Andie a Happy Birthday

I had a post all ready to go up.  Really, I did and I even think it was kind of funny but THEN I realized that TODAY Andie MacDonald turns 21 years old.  It’s amazing; one minute you’re bitching and moaning about your little kids driving you crazy and the next moment they’re all grown up and you’re thinking how did that happen.

What’s really bizarre is that I can remember my 21st birthday so vividly and it’s amazing that it was 31 years ago.  I had a summer birthday so I was rarely around all my friends but the summer between my junior and senior years in college, a ton of us stayed around Baltimore.  Man was it hot.  The thing I remember most about that summer was that we had a thunderstorm every single day around 5:30.

I was working on campus for the affirmative action officer at Johns Hopkins and my goal was to always get home before the storm and chill out and watch M*A*S*H which came on TV at 5:30.  It’s funny the silly little things that you remember.

But back to my birthday.  I turned 21 and most of my best friends were guys so we all hung out and got wasted and possibly did some illegal narcotics.  At some point in the evening I passed out.  Now this is itself isn’t what I remember.  What I remember is that I was passed out but I could still hear what was going on around me.  Has that ever happened to you?  You’re basically comatose but you are still aware of your surroundings? It’s extremely frustrating, especially in this situation.

Why you might say?  Because the guys I was with had gotten me a cake.  I had passed out before we ate said cake and there was a discussion right in front of me about whether it would be a good idea or not to smash the cake into my face.  This is what it’s like hanging out with 21-year-old guys.  No girl would EVER think this was a good idea.

I just remember hearing this and thinking “oh no” while one guy tried to convince the other guy that throwing the cake into the face of a passed out person wasn’t a good idea.  Thank you Mark.  Bad boy Francis.

What ended up happening was that Francis decided that since he couldn’t throw the cake in my face, he would simply plant his face into the cake.  When I got up the next day I asked what the hell happened in the kitchen to the cake and that’s exactly what occurred.

But today is Andie’s birthday and to the vast relief of all, Andie is a MUCH better kid than I am.  I don’t expect her to do ANY drugs but I’m sure she’ll drink however I know her friend’s and I doubt they’ll throw a cake in her face.

So Andie, I say to you on your 21st birthday.  You’re a great kid!  Fun, bright, artistic, creative and hilarious; your warped sense of humor completely meshes with mine and for that I thank you.

In spite of the fact that you tried to kill me on the way out, I love you VERY MUCH and I’m glad that, even though you WEREN’T planned, that you decided to join our family anyways.

LOVE,

Mom

Yay! Happy birthday. My daughter wasn’t planned either, but so far she’s turning out to be an awesome addition. She’s eight. I’ll let you know if that changes around say age 13.

Happy Birthday, Andie! You may not have been “planned” but there are “plans” for you in this world!

I suspect this due to your mom having told us readers what an intelligent, considerate, resourceful and independent person you are—therefore there must be something pretty darn awesome waiting for you!

Happy Birthday to Andie! (Yes, I know that feeling when you’re aware but can’t do anything about it – sucks).

And people who smash cake instead of eating it should be arrested far more often than people who drink underage.
