This blog is not for the light-hearted or easily offended. If either one of those descriptions applies to you, i would suggest you start drinking before you read this blog. A sense of humor is suggested. If you don't have one that sucks for you … find one and get a life!

In which i wonder about shitstorms?

Believe it or not, I don’t usually try to put my opinions out there on “hot-button” topics.  It’s not because I don’t have them, of course I do.  It’s because I’m just not really looking for the drama.  People don’t think that’s the case because when I do give my opinion, it’s usually pretty honest and therefore it can create a sort of shitstorm.

However, I’m not trying to increase my blog traffic by a shit storm.  In my opinion, that doesn’t do anything for me.  Take that stupid Ronnie Dunn fiasco, see here.  Yeah, it definitely sent me a ton of readers on THAT DAY.  Almost all of them hated me and made no bones about telling me that I sucked, was stupid and mean, and that I should have been happy eating in the same restaurant with their sainted little singer.

Out of the 2000 some odd hits that day, I bet I got maybe 2 or 3 new readers out of that.  On a mathematical scale, that’s awful so it was definitely not worth it.  What was worth it was seeing how ridiculous and out of hand his followers got over something that was a joke.  My favorite comment of the bunch was the person telling me that I was stupid and shouldn’t breed.  REALLY? I have a kid graduating cum laude from Duke and I SHOULDN’T BREED??????

Same thing with my circumcision post.  I wrote what was in my mind a “funny story” but it turned out that cutting off foreskin is NO LAUGHING MATTER.  That all happened right when I started blogging and I have since learned that there are all sorts of “taboo” topics that seem to take on a life of their own.

These topics include breast-feeding, circumcision, attachment parenting, homeschooling and probably porn and gun control. One topic that I want to write on is teen drinking but honestly, I just don’t know if I want to deal with all the MADD fanatics out there.

It’s not that I’m scared of them but I have noticed that some people put out provocative posts just to get the exposure.  I don’t care about that crap. Of course I’d like my blog to grow but I’d like it to grow because people enjoy reading it, not because I write about stuff that sets people off.

Now, I’ve been involved in more than my fair share of clusterfucks in my time because I have a big mouth and always say what I think, no matter how unpopular the opinion is, but I don’t usually go looking for trouble.

I’m writing this because of course, the TIME magazine spread on attachment parenting has provoked a lot of discussion.  I saw it and I was like “yuck” with the picture mostly cuz the kid looks like he’s about 6 years old.  I think attachment parenting is dumb but like everything else, I’m a live and let live person.  I mean, I also don’t like lots of piercing and tattoos and have forbidden them on my kids as long as I have anything to do with their money flow.

However, if you want tattoos I don’t give a shit and I’m constantly amazed how many people do.  Can you imagine how much less drama there would be if people simply minded their own god damn business?

So, this post really doesn’t have a point but really, neither does this blog.  For me, this entire journey is a fun trip and I have no clue where I’ll end up.  I don’t know if this is a good blog or a bad blog or a big blog or a little blog; I just know that it’s my blog.

If you’d like me to address more serious concerns, I actually enjoy the posts.  I just don’t know if my readers just really like the humor or the serious stuff or a mixture of both.  I mostly will keep doing what I feel like but I must admit that some of my best posts have come from serious questions and issues.

So, what cha think?  Let me know.

Lynn

Thanks for drawing up some light on such a controversial matter. Yeah, it’s true that advertising is playing a key role throughout this world. Also creating controversy is a deliberate way to get increased advertise. But it’s not tolerable at all. It’s the purity of parenting that kept our society strong & disciplined. When it goes down it really bells an alarm. That’s a shame.

I love whatever you write! :-) As I once read on someone’s blog, “Specialization is for insects” :D. I remember laughing a lot at that.

    How is Keely doing?

I think it’s your blog and you should write about whatever the hell you want. Screw ’em if they don’t like it.

If only the media would let us live and let live. Pictures like that for the sake of “discussion” are really more for shock value and to get people fired up. I am all for breastfeeding, as long it doesn’t involve me, and I don’t have to watch it. (And my children are healthy and happy and in not need of therapy…yet :) That picture was kind of creepy because of the look on the kids face.

I agree…it was both the defiant look on the mom and the smug/condescending look of the kid…

I read your blog because you speak the truth. You aren’t a bullshitter. And I like that when you are talking about funny things, serious things, and everything in between. So many people I know, in real life and online, go around with their fucking rose colored glasses taking up all the space on their foreheads, and it’s nice, every once in awhile, to read something that looks at shit head on. I’m all in favor of the occasional shit storm. You pull them off rather gracefully. Me? I’d fall in a heap of my own spew.

I like to hear your opinions on serious issues, mainly because I usually agree with you. But also because your blunt honesty is refreshing. I only occasionally write about hot-button topics, but it’s usually because it something that affects my family or something I’m especially passionate about.

I just started reading your blog and I love it. I get myself in trouble all the time for saying what i think. I basically say what everyone else is thinking. I haven’t read the article yet and plan to. I did go back and read some of your posts and I did read the circumcism one – it reminded me of a conversation I would have sitting out on the porch drinking wine with my girlfriends. I loved it – and – it’s true. That’s what girls would say. The challenge is with blogging is everyone has an opinion and get hot and heated vs. just having a discussion and seeing each others view points for what it is…..they take everything so literal.

I say don’t worry about increasing your readers. Be true to you are….blog about what you want and know if you put it out there – there is always going to be a Debby Downer. However, for the most part – it sparks discussion, thought and sometimes idiots….but at the end of the day your friends know you. Write WTF you want.

I love what you write and discuss – they are the issues/events that are experienced through you. People need to calm the eff down and let people express their own opinions. If they have an opposing view, maybe THEY should step up and start blogging about it on their own damn time and web space. Psshhh-hhaa.

I think there is definitely no pleasing everyone, and it seems like even when you say ‘live and let live’ that people can twist your words or take them out of context. People need spend more time to self-reflecting and less time judging.

I love reading your blog, simply for the no nonsense type of posts. You speak your mind, and why shouldn’t you? It’s YOUR blog! That’s what we’re supposed to do on our blogs. If people don’t like it, they can stop reading you; though, I have a feeling your readers/followers will stay. You may just get rid of a few trolls here and there… Good luck, and keep writing about WHATEVER you feel like writing about that day!!

thank you…that’s one of the nicest comments that i’ve ever gotten :)

  13. Well, you just knew that I, like a lot of your new readers, was going to read those articles now don’t you.

Firstly, hilarious! How people get upset about what clearly is a joke when in Nashville is beyond me! Secondly, your outburst with your MIL about why circumcision had me rolling about laughing – it is just the sort of thing I would do. The whole context of the story was about how you speak your mind and what your outburst is about wasn’t the point to the story.

I love your blog on a personal level and I really appreciate that you say what you think. From reading recent posts (as not had chance to read your archive yet), you set up this blog to say what you think and in my humble opinion I think you should continue to do that.

Why should you change the way you write and what you write about? There are plenty of blogs on the internet and if they don’t like yours then it would be a better use of their time to find one they do like instead of berating you with replies which are intended to be hateful rather than useful.

thanks so much…i just do what I want around here. I was just curious whether there were any particular topics that people were interested in. I can’t imagine that i would ever actually take it in a direction i wasn’t interested in.

      thanks for commenting.
