In which it’s bracketology time

The weekend is over and it’s the last weekend before the most important time of the year for the MacDonald family (and probably many others actually.)  What time is that you say?

Why, it’s March Madness.  Don’t tell me that you don’t know what March Madness is.  It’s the NCAA Men’s Basketball tournament, that’s what it is.  You see we (the MacDonald family) live in the midst of college basketball territory.

To the west is Wake Forest and to the east is Duke, Chapel Hill and NC State so it’s impossible to grow up in this area unaware of college basketball.  I’m sure that you know that Duke and Chapel Hill, two fierce rivals, are but a short distance apart geographically and that 15/501 (the highway) that runs between the two schools is known as Tobacco Road.  You didn’t know that? Where do you live?

At any rate, since I was a kid both the ACC tournament and the NCAA tournament has been a big deal.  Once the advent of computerized brackets came about, the entire family participates in NCAA basketball pools.  Each year all 5 of us enter the tournament brackets and play for bragging rights.

It’s difficult not to let your school loyalty cloud your head so that you don’t choose it correctly.  I have actually even won the NCAA pool once and that’s given me the right to lord it over my family all year.  Of course, Keely usually does the worst as she knows the least about basketball and picks teams so arbitrarily it’s difficult to imagine that she has any system whatsoever.

Now the pools are so computerized that you can make up all sorts of things.  For example, a few years ago we were all going on spring break and we were stuck at an airport for a layover.  I logged into my bracket and saw that I had entered Kevin’s bracket for him since he had been out of town.

I also saw that you could make a “jersey” to support the team you like so I made Kevin a pink jersey with his name “candy ass” on it.  Of course Keely, Daniel, Andie and I thought it was hilarious but Kevin was so put out that he took a water bottle and threw water in my face.

I couldn’t believe it and neither could the kids but you can see how riled people get over the NCAA tournament (and apparently having a jersey labeled candy ass.)

So, next weekend is the ACC tourney and after that it’s time for “bracketology” and I’m planning on winning once again.

Just thought you’d like to know about the “important” times of my life.  Good luck if you entered and beware that I’m gonna kick your ass!

Hilarious!! “candy ass”!!! I don’t understand why he got mad! I live in Indiana heart of basketball country.. I know, but you live in the heart of Southern basketball country! Big 10 is who we ALWAYS root for. It’s an exciting time at our house and neighborhood as well. It’s everywhere you go this time of year. Lots of fun! and rivalry! Have fun with your brackets this year, I know we will!
