In which it’s surgery day

So it’s Monday and today is the day that Keely has surgery so I’m probably down at Duke University Hospital even as we speak.  Well, unless you’re reading this before I even wake up in which case I’m still sleeping.

But probably I’m down at the hospital.  We are getting up at 4:00 to drive down there and we’re taking two cars.  That’s because I’m going home on Tuesday morning and Kevin is staying.  Last time we started alternating a little later but this time I’m planning on heading home because The United Way of Greater Greensboro is having a luncheon for the Women’s Philanthropy Group and I have been in on the planning.

As a matter of fact, I was the one who pushed for us to have Karen Walrond aka @chookooloonks come be our speaker.  She wrote a book “the beauty of different” and she’s speaking about “sheros” which are your female heroes.  I am actually the host to a party for her on Tuesday night that all the sponsors are coming to.  Now I know what you guys are thinking: “jeez, she’s awful abandoning her child” but I certainly won’t abandon her if things don’t go well today.

I already switched the party from my house to a friend’s house but I’m still the sponsor of the party and the hostess.  It’s confusing and I hope it all works out okay.

If all goes according to plan during surgery, they will do a bone graft, a bone marrow transplant and possibly add a steel plate into her pelvis.  Tuesday and Wednesday will be awful days but Keely will be ok.  The plan is for me to run home on Tuesday and be back Wednesday morning to that Kevin can leave and go to work.  After all, somebody has to pay the bills around here and it sure isn’t me.

Hopefully she’ll be out by Friday and I can bring her home then.  After that, it’s four months recuperation, physical therapy and crutches.  Keely had intended on finishing a book she started except that YESTERDAY I saw that something along that vein has recently been written and optioned for a movie.  Boy were we pissed about that.

I told her not to read it but that I would and see if it’s similar so she can decide whether to continue her book her not.  I don’t really know the protocol on this.  We are also working on a top-secret project together so that should take some time.  I’m actually looking forward to working with her because she, like her father, is incredibly organized and it might be like a breath of fresh air actually having a plan.

Positive thoughts have been pouring in and I just want to say how amazing it is to have the Internet wishing us well.  Last time, I didn’t have a blog and it was just us, paranoid that our child had cancer.  The warm wishes of strangers, or not so strangers, have been overwhelming.

Keely was hilarious when she was doped up last time and of course, I didn’t document it.  This time I will and hopefully I’ll share some of the laughs and positive news with you guys.

As always, thanks for your support and comments and prayers. Sorry this is such a boring post but truthfully, I’m a little nervous.

Lynn MacDonald

UPDATE: the surgery went well and they put in some bone grafts so we are very optimistic that this will help her pain.  Thanks all!!

NOTHER UPDATE: uggghhh…unfortunately, they had a huge vascular problem and had to rush Keely back for emergency surgery so we won’t know what’s going on for a while.  I’ll let you know more later.

Well, I’m here like many more will be to wish Keely all the best and I am sure she will get through surgery wonderfully and regale you with anaesthesia-filled musings when she is coming round. I can’t imagine what all the worry is like for you and Kevin, or the waiting for surgery that must feel like it is never going to end.

I hope your luncheon goes well too.

I may be in the Internet friends category (or not :-)) but you can count on me being a well-wisher (that sounds very elderly) – I remembered the surgery too and was thinking about it this morning as I wasn’t sure of the date. I am sure everything is going to be okay. And I am looking forward to reading all about how Keely handled it. :-)

Keely is going to be a shero. :D And so are you!

Love and absolutely on your side, Vidya

Hey…have been thinking of you all and I know that things will go well, I am happy to hear that there are big plans to improve Keely’s condition. I was not quite sure what the plan was.
Good luck with your United Way project, I am so excited that you have chosen to support giving back through your life and your blog. People need a great role model and a reminder sometimes to do the what they can to help the less fortunate.
    Call if you need me.

It’s not boring at all. I’ll be thinking about you and Keely all week. I want her to have the most successful experience possible. I want you all to have a peaceful recovery. And the protocol is typically that once something similar has been done, she can use her awareness of that to her advantage in publicity. In the case of my novel (which was started YEARS before it was finished) I panicked when I heard about the movie Almost Famous. Which turned out to be completely different. Seriously. Odds are, Keely’s book is unique, and she can say “X book (previously published) brought you this, and now I bring you THIS” when she’s pitching to publishers.

Also, you’re not a horrible Mom to be planning for life to continue. Hope it all goes right, she gets her green hat, and the surgery is successful.

I tossed up several prayers yesterday while in church and continue to do so. Someday in the future, I look forward to a few cocktails with the two of you ~ we can trade surgery stories! Anxiously awaiting an update . . . bring on the green hat!

I have been thinking of your little girl (even if she ain’t so little) all day – even whilst going through my physical, odd but true!

I hope everything goes smoothly, the doctors are aazing and Keely’s doped-upness (not a word, it so is now!!!) Is spectacularly funny. I also hope everything they hope for her comes true.

Hope your luncheon goes well (can we hope for the best luncheon in the history of those shindigs?) And that everything goes A-ok for you to (No one uses A-OK anymore do they?)

    Sending happy healing thoughts.

As for publishing niches – read the book and see how similar Keely’s is. Maybe it’s only a little similar. For example, when Susan Shapiro (my writing teacher) was looking to sell her addiction memoir (Lighting Up), she checked bookstores and saw a lot of addiction memoirs about drugs and alcohol, but hers was about serial addictions (she quit pot and got hooked on chewing gum, then diet cola, then scented candles (which sounds OK, but she almost started a fire), and so on). So although there were a lot of books similar to hers, there was nothing exactly like it.

I’m working on a novel and I’ve taken some classes on breaking into publishing – feel free to email me if you want to talk about Keely’s book.
