In which my AC died

hot button issuesI guess every appliance nowadays is designed to only last 10 years.  I say that because my house is 10 years old and it seems that virtually everything in the house is falling apart.

I don’t remember everything falling apart when I lived in my parents house so either I was clueless (probably) or they used to make things to last longer.  Case in point: my air conditioner.

Now that it’s going to be hot this week, predictably my air conditioner stopped working.  When did we discover this: last night before bedtime of course.  Had we discovered it earlier perhaps we could have done something about it but we weren’t home and we didn’t notice.

Last night, however, it seemed quite warm in our room and Kevin checked it out and the AC wasn’t working.  We opened the windows, turned off the AC, and turned on the fan.  We both slept lousy because we’re very spoiled humans and Kevin likes it to be 65 degrees in our room at night and trust me, that wasn’t happening.

I figured the coils had frozen and I would turn it off all night and it’d be better in the morning.  So we did that, and I turned it on this morning and it’s not really working and I just checked and the coils are either STILL frozen or they have frozen again.  In any case, there’s very little air and what little air there is isn’t very cool.

It’s supposed to be close to 90 degrees today so I’m not very excited.  Predictably, I called the HVAC company I have a contract with and they said they’re booked up today and they would call me back.  That was 3 hours ago.

This past winter, my furnace was broken for two weeks and I spent my time freezing to death and now this.  I’ve also replaced my washer/dryer and my dishwasher along with the hot water heater and the upstairs AC.

I think the lesson is that you might as well just buy crap appliances because even if you buy good ones they seem to die on the same schedule.  Probably tomorrow my refrigerator will go and then my oven although honestly, it very rarely gets used.

I just wanted you to know that if I’m hot all week I’ll be cranky all week and therefore I’ll be bitching and moaning all week and thus my posts will be ranting all week.

See how I keep you guys abreast with my thought processes? I’m awesome like that.  Hope you guys have a great day while I broil.

I think appliances all belong to the same union, because its like a total work stoppage – when one goes, they all go.

Did you check your air filter(s)? If you haven’t changed it (them) within the last six months, there’s a good chance that’s the problem.

65 degrees in the bedroom makes for AWESOME sleeping conditions ~ that Kevin is a smart cookie. I completely agree with you about the short ten year life span on appliances. My snazzy Bosch dishwasher bit the dust exactly ten years after purchase. I replaced it with a Kenmore and am very happy with it. All replacement appliances will come from Sears. I’m actually looking forward to the Sub Zero fridge dieing. I HATE that thing with a passion. Stay cool!

    Probably a $10 part that’ll cost you $100 to get it installed…like a capacitor. No sweat…ha ha.

My AC has been out for about 2 weeks now. On Wednesday, it was supposed to be fixed but there was another part broken as well & now that is on order so we have to wait again until that comes in. This AC unit is for the upstairs which of course, is where we sleep. It is 82 degrees up there and I am getting very frustrated.

I hope you can get yours fixed quicker than me.

This has happened to me in Phoenix, at the end of July…TWICE. Both times we were trapped in my parents house for over a week. Pffffffft. I’d like to blame my divorce on two consecutive years of crashing at my parent’s house, waiting for AC service, but, really, it was because he was the devil. Which you think would have made him impervious to heat, but noooooooooo. :)

AC’s need to be cleaned regularly. Every three months if you use it frequently. In that way, technicians can also check for possible problems.
