In which the Marriott wants me in Cairo

Do you know what cracks me up? NO? Well, that was rhetorical anyhow but I’ll tell you.  What cracks me up is these random emails I get from places like the Marriott.  For example, I just checked my email and the Marriott just informed me that if I book a 5-night stay I can get 2 additional days free.  TWO FREE DAYS!!!

What’s amazing about this is that the stay is in Cairo!  That’s right; Cairo as in EGYPT.   Now why the Marriott thinks I’m just going to drop by Egypt is what perplexes me here.  First of all, I don’t actually travel abroad all that much.  Second of all, I have never stayed in a Marriott when I did travel abroad so why do they think that I might even consider going to Egypt and even if I did go to Egypt, why would I be staying at a Marriott?

These are just some of the things I think about when I get all this crap in email.  Now on my normal computer, these types of messages usually go to my junk mail and I don’t really spend any time looking and/or thinking about them but for some reason, on my iPad, I can’t block emails so I get all sorts of crap.

And since I seem to spend an inordinate amount of time on my iPad that means I spend an inordinate amount of time thinking about stupid shit.  Well, stupid shit that I don’t come up with on my own.

Without this spam filter, I now get to think about online dating, exotic places to travel and all sorts of other options.  Why just the other day I got this great email about sex toys and how they would be a great fit for my blog.  Really?  I don’t actually remember spending any time discussing sex or sex toys.  It’s not that I don’t know what sex is; after all I do have three children. I just have certain topics that I really don’t discuss on my blog.  It cracks me up that people just read all this shit and then they think, “I know you!”  Do you?  Do you really think you know me?

After all, I’m just sharing what I want to so technically you know certain aspects of me.  I won’t put anything on this blog that I wouldn’t feel comfortable having my kids read.  After all, they have to exist in this world and while they really don’t like the blog and they feel I completely misrepresent them (I don’t) at least I don’t put stuff out there that they’d have a heart attack knowing.

But back to spam mail.   I often wonder how it actually benefits the sender.  I wonder if some people get those emails and think “hell yeah! Now I totally want to go to Egypt!”  I really don’t know, I just know I get a ton of them from travel sites.

Speaking of travel sites, I’m leaving tonight to go to London… as in England.  No, not because the Marriott sent me something but because I have something I need to do over there.  Why am I telling you this?  First of all because it’s my blog and I can do whatever I want and second of all, I will obviously not have as much access to a computer therefore I doubt I will be responding to any comments.

I will, of course, still be posting because I’m all organized like that so don’t get your panties all in a wad (is that the expression?), ok?

Well, here we are at the end of another entirely random and useless post.  Just this morning I was explaining to Kevin that I spend so much time daydreaming about random shit that it’s astonishing that anything actually gets done.  Oh wait!  It doesn’t.

So, have a great week and I’ll be back in the good old USA next Sunday.

Okay bye,

Lynn MacDonald

I get those stupid spam emails too. Alas, none from the Marriott for free nights in Cairo, where I do actually want to go, by the way, and I do have a Marriott rewards card! The spammers keep sending me Cialis and Viagra messages…yeah, I need those because secretly I’m a man and they, in all their infinite wisdom, figured it out!

London! YOU lucky gal! Have a super time! Any room in your suit case for moi? lol.

Oh to be an internet spammer and have nothing to do but send out marketing shit all day and night. They’re probably cloistered in a padded room right next to Peggy of discover commercial fame. True…once you get a message sometimes it’s hard to resist…talk about subliminal messages! have fun on your trip!

Several things come to my mind when I read today’s blog:

First of all, advertising usually has the purpose to get your attention and make you aware that a company, brand, service, etc. EXISTS. For this reason, the Marriott “spam” was very effective – it got you thinking about traveling and possibly staying at a Marriott. Since you are a blogger and have more reach than a regular person, it is even more advantageous for the company since you mentioned their name several times in your blog! In addition, since you do travel (for example your trip to London) it is not out of the realm of possibilities that you might stay at a Marriott in the future (especially since you have been thinking about this brand a lot).

Secondly, you do occasionally write about things related to sex. I had to look up the term “sloppy seconds” from one of your blogs.

    Safe travels!

Have a great trip. Drink tea and eat crumpets with the Queen…go see Big Ben…ride a double decker bus…lie back and think of England. No, wait! I mean, visit the River Thames. Regardless, have fun! Leave the spam to us. We have more time.
