Xmas Letter 2000

The Fourth Annual MacDonald Christmas Letter

So it’s that time of year again. My update on the lives of the MacDonald’s that many of you have waited an entire year for! Well, the year started off with a BANG. Or should I say, a BREAK. On the last day of the millennium it was a balmy 60 some-odd degrees so we decided to take a family bicycle ride in the park. We were having a great time when Kevin suggested to Keely that she show me how well her new bike did on the off-road bike trails. She was a little scared, but figured if her dad had confidence in her, she could handle the steep hill. And she did, for about 30 yards. Then she hit a root and wiped out in a particularly major way. As I threw down my bike and started running for her, echoes of “Kevin, you *!@##$@ idiot” could be heard all over Greensboro. Sure enough, I get there and she’s saying “My arm, my arm!”

Of course, I knew (being the 5th time) that it was broken. Not because it was at a weird angle or anything, but because she gets this expression on her face when it is truly broken (as compared to not being broken, which it never is). Anyway, after glaring at Kevin, I ride the ½ mile back to the car. (No cars allowed in this park) and proceed to start getting the bikes loaded up and calling our personal orthopedic guy (which being 3:00 on December 31, 1999 is not around anyways!). But here’s the best part! Kevin is walking Keely and the two bikes back to the car and he turns to her and says, and I quote “ Are you feeling better yet? Do you think you can get back on the bike, surprise mommy and ride to the car?” (That’s my favorite part of the story). So, after a brief trip to the hospital, she got her cast, we doped her up, and went out to dinner as planned. So, that was how the year began!

Anyway, other than that, it’s been a pretty good year. Here are the recaps.

Kevin – since I keep getting Christmas letters informing that so-and-so is the hardest-working man in the universe, I won’t bore you with that crap. Kevin is still working long hours. (Either that or he’s just avoiding home). Basketball is still his favorite sport to play, although he hasn’t been playing as much as he’d like to. He’s been working hard on breaking other kids bones but has had no luck although he has helped Andie develop quite an arm in baseball.

Keely – Keely is now 11 years old and in 5th grade and has let me know in no uncertain terms that she is much smarter than me. Since I peaked brain-wise at age 18, I have no comeback for this statement. She could be right, I just can’t remember. She is still swimming, although the 6 week setback with the broken arm did not help. She has recently discovered that boys are pretty cute and I feel confident that since I’m clueless, didn’t like growing up in the first place, and didn’t have a date until I was 22 years old, that I will not be able to cope. Kevin is threatening to put her in a tower (except she does not have long golden hair!). She talks back but is quite amusing and is quite good at upsetting her brother and sister.

Andie – Andie has had a tough year. She is 9 ½ and in 4th grade. She started not feeling well in April and after 6 months and millions of medical tests, has recently gotten her adenoids out. We are optimistic that they were the problem and she’ll start feeling much better. She has been attempting to swim and play baseball but has had a rough time. However, she is still clever, creative and funny. We think she’ll be the next Gary Larson as she spends much time drawing cartoons.

Daniel – Daniel is having a great year! He is now 7 and in 1st grade. He started soccer in the fall and it was hilarious. He is planning on playing soccer in the early spring and baseball in the late spring. He has really come a long way. He might be the only child ever to ask for a “kickstand” for his Hanukah/Xmas present. Hope there’s not a huge run on them for Santa this year!

And finally me! (Lynn) I am 41 years old and apparently back in school although which grade depends on the day. Since we’ve had a pretty decent year, I’ve only been mildly screwed up. There is no cure for what ails me, however, so I just muddle through life being either obnoxious or quite funny depending on who you ask. Anyway, I have spent a lot of time at the pool with the kids, carpooling, and generally trying to ignore them so I can read my books.

So that’s the MacDonald Clan. Hope your year goes well and I hope our next one does too!
